 Jude Stamp

Original Working title – “The Wasted years” now Jude uses “Unsafe in a Sanctuary”
Exploring consumer’s views of Safety in psychiatric wards and what can help women BE
safe and FEEL safe.

The first Priority of a ‘sanctuary is that EVERYONE should be and feel safe

Project Goals
1. Determine what women need to feel and be safe in wards
2. Review protocols in Victoria
3. Encourage this best practice in policy and delivery of safety to be in place in all
wards in Vic

Consultations yielded many Common Concerns
• Consumers should be the ones who educate staff
• Focus groups in metro and country yield consistent results
• Often no comprehensive assessment on entry
• Staff could be more available
• Some nurses seem unsure of their skills
• Some dismissive treatment / judgmental
• Too much nurse time sitting in fishbowl
• In HD with men who had threatened them
• Abusive language from young men
• Frightened to return to ward

“We need Consistent, Mandated, Clear and Actually Practiced Policy”
